Accessibility statement
Accessibility is the point of this site, so this page says what it meets, how that was checked, and how to tell me when it falls short.
What this site aims to meet
This site aims to meet WCAG 2.2, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, at level AA on every page, in the light and dark themes, at every width from 320 pixels, and with text spacing, zoom and forced colours applied.
It also aims to meet these level AAA criteria, by name:
- 1.4.6 Contrast (Enhanced): all text is at least 7:1 against its background.
- 1.4.8 Visual Presentation: lines no longer than 80 characters, spacing you can override, no justified text, and colours that follow your settings.
- 2.2.3 No Timing: nothing on the site is timed.
- 2.3.3 Animation from Interactions: the one animation runs once, and not at all when you ask for reduced motion.
- 2.4.9 Link Purpose (Link Only): every link’s text says where it goes.
- 2.4.10 Section Headings: every section has a heading.
- 2.4.13 Focus Appearance: a 3 pixel two-colour ring on every link and control.
- 2.5.5 Target Size (Enhanced): every control is at least 44 by 44 pixels, except links inside sentences.
- 3.2.5 Change on Request: nothing changes without you asking.
- 3.3.9 Accessible Authentication (Enhanced): there is nothing to sign in to.
It is also tested against the European accessibility standard EN 301 549, as far as the automated checks below cover it, and it does not use an accessibility overlay, a plug-in that claims to fix accessibility automatically.
How it was tested
Automated checks run on every change, before anything is published:
- axe-core, an automated accessibility checker, across every page, and on a page of each kind in both themes, with reduced motion, with forced colours and at three widths
- keyboard scripts for the skip link and the settings panel
- a check that every control is at least 44 pixels in each direction
- the WCAG text-spacing override, which widens the space between letters, words, lines and paragraphs
- a line length of no more than 80 characters
- valid HTML
- no requests to any other site
I check by hand before launch and after any change to the templates:
- keyboard only
- NVDA, the NonVisual Desktop Access screen reader, with Firefox on Windows
- VoiceOver on iOS Safari
- 400% zoom
- Windows contrast themes
- the text-spacing bookmarklet
The automated checks are a floor, not a ceiling. They cannot judge most of what matters, which is what the check by hand is for.
Known issues
- The CV PDF is generated as a tagged PDF but has not yet been through Acrobat’s accessibility checker.
If you find something else, I would like to know.
Tell me if something does not work
Email me at ryan@ryan-duncan.co.uk, say which page and what happened, and I aim to reply within five working days. If a page blocks you from something you need, say so and I will send it another way.
