About
I’m Ryan Duncan, a senior front-end engineer in Scotland. Nine years in: agencies first, then finance and onboarding tools for a marketplace, and lately building for Disabled people, which includes me. I’m a Disabled driver, and Close to the Door started with my own problem: a painted symbol on the tarmac says nothing about whether the space is suitable for my needs.
Now
I’m a senior front-end engineer at Fruugo, a marketplace, and have been since June 2023. I lead the front-end of the onboarding tools, which has cut onboarding time by 60%, and led the front-end of the internal finance tools, which cut manual data processing time by 40% and reporting cycles from five days to two.
Since 2025 I’ve also worked freelance as a digital accessibility consultant with an accessibility consultancy. That means WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 audits for European banking clients, fixing what the audits find alongside their design, engineering and marketing teams, and training for their teams. It taught me to write a finding so that the person who owns the fix will actually make it.
Close to the Door is my own app: a mobile app, kept up to date by its users, that helps Disabled drivers find accessible parking spaces. It’s live on iOS and Android, built with Expo and Supabase, and maps more than 500,000 accessible parking locations worldwide.
Before
Before Fruugo I was at Web Integrations in Aberdeen, which Aspect Digital bought in November 2022, as a web developer from September 2018 and then as lead developer from October 2021 to June 2023. Across those years I managed more than 50 client projects, then led a team of four developers, introducing code review standards and automated testing pipelines.
Before that I was a front-end developer at MTC Media in Dundee, from 2017 to 2018, building front-ends for agency clients.
Alongside the day job I completed an MSc in Cyber Security at Robert Gordon University, with first-class honours, from 2022 to 2024. I used what I learned to build an internal tool that found weaknesses on colleagues’ home networks.
Before any of that I did a BSc in Digital Media at Robert Gordon University, also with first-class honours, from 2015 to 2017, and an HND in Visual Communication at Aberdeen College.
